Sacred Choral Concert

Saturday, June 27 | 7:30 PM | Sacred Choral Concert

Collegium Canticum Novum | Matthias Mücksch (Dresden), Conductor

The program is framed by settings of individual Mass texts by Scandinavian composers from the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. You will also hear the double-choir motet "Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf" by Johann Sebastian Bach, accompanied by works from the Thuringian Bach family—J. S. Bach’s ancestors. Sonorous compositions from the German Romantic era by Johannes Brahms and others round out the concert program. Experience a compelling, contrasting blend of sacred choral music spanning six centuries!

Founded in 1982 by participants in a Protestant church youth singing week, the choir—currently comprising about 40 members from diverse professional backgrounds (many with musical experience)—has developed into a widely recognized and esteemed vocal ensemble under the continuous direction of Matthias Mücksch (Dresden). Its name alludes to the Psalm verse "Cantate Domino canticum novum" ("Sing to the Lord a new song") and reflects the choir's commitment to performing works by contemporary composers, which are included in every program.

30 Years of World Heritage

In 1996, the castle church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an almost completely preserved prime example of 19th-century monument preservation. From 2012 to 2016, it was renovated and restored with funding from the State of Saxony-Anhalt, the Federal Republic of Germany, the European Union, and private donors.
